I Heart SFU Campaign

Routine building maintenance has become a major issue at SFU due to years of insufficient funding. The University estimates it needs at least $20 million more every year just to keep all the buildings properly maintained, and with government funding for maintenance dropping by over 90% in just 3 years, it is unlikely that necessary repairs and upgrades will be made in a timely manner. The University would need over $700 million just to catch up on all the deferred maintenance on the Burnaby Campus.

With such a large issue looming over the University community, the GSS has decided to join the conversation and add our voice to the call for more funding from the Province. The GSS will be launching the “I Heart SFU” campaign on January 1st, 2012.

Students and staff will be encouraged to take pictures of neglected or deteriorating buildings in exchange for an entry into a prize draw. Once the campaign is concluded on February 29th, 2012, the photos will be compiled into a package, which the GSS will use to highlight the negative effects of deferred maintenance at SFU.
